I. just. got. spammed.

I was so hoping this wouldn't become necesary, but on the other hand had a feeling that with the new and fabulous commenting field, it might prove a problem along the way. It was only one, little comment spam, I'm not even sure it was a real spam - but it was enough to p*** me off and think: YOU'RE NOT GETTING AWAY WITH IT! So here goes, all of you nice people out there will have seen this in some shape or form before - and for you, mean spammer - you probably have too, but I'm DEAD serious! I will not tolerate you! Therefore:

1. Any advertisment to be posted to this site, must be approved by me in advance, by writing me an e-mail with the contents of your proposed ad. The address can be found on the main page.

2. You may post the comment, endorsing your product/site/service, but I will charge you a fee of $1000 per individual comment.

3. The comment will remain on this site for no longer than 10 minutes, after which it will be deleted.

4. Payment is due one day after you've left your comment. The amount will be donated to Médecins sans Frontières, and I'm pretty sure they'll help me collect it. Otherwise my attourney-family will.

PS: Any links from fellow, not-for-profit bloggers are of course welcome. I think you know who you are, so just link away. If in doubt at all, e-mail me first.

I saw that yesterday...and I think it's the first time I've seen SPAM in a comment box, anywhere! I guess this means you're very, very special...

Hmm, maybe you're right Stephanie, but I'm not sure that's a way I'd like to be appreciated! :-) I have seen it happening around, but usually a lot worse than mine was - they usually go for older posts, and then leave a bunch of comments. I know Pim and Barrett of Too Many Chef's have putten up advertising policies because of the same problem, so I thought better safe than sorry. I think it's so rude to just walk in and endorse yourself that way. I put a lot of work into this site and I will d*** well decide myself who or what products I'll recommend... I still haven't blown of enough steam I can see - I better go eat something ;-)

Going by the amount of spam we see on email, and from some of the war stories I hear, setting up rules isn't really going to cut it.
The common ground I see is that eventually someone will exploit a comment system if it is easily scriptable and then it won't be just one comment...
Others have had success either by forcing preview or in the extreme case of not posting any comments until manually approved. Surely a PITA, but preferable to the alternative of not allowing comments at all.

Oh, Zarah...I saw that comment and was hoping that it wasn't what I thought...arrrgh! I'm so sorry you had that happen, and hope you're able to avoid more in the future.

I know it is a war that's not likely to have me as the winner, but I sure ain't gonna make it easy for them! And I'd hate having to preview or do advanced approvals or all that - what I like about blogs is that fact that you can relatively easy share in what's going on. That said, I think it would be cool if there was a way to make it impossible for people to comment unless they provided a functioning URL or email-address - any HTML wizzards out there?

Argh. Am still mad. And it's now - well, lots of hours since I saw it. But thanks for all your nice words, I sure hope this will be a once in a lifetime experience *crossing fingers - hoping - praying*

And yes, I can be very serious when the mood strikes me - but most of the time I'm very amiable:-) - or so I'd like to think anyways! I don't hope this will happen to any of you ever!

Hey Zarah, that's strange I got spammed the same time as you (I didn't get the chance to see yours). My third spam, actually. The other two (they commented on old posts as you said), Typepad removed them for me, they were there and then poof they were gone. But yesterday morning I had to remove one manually and put a padlock on the IP adress.

Hey Zarah,

Doesn't seem like I can leave a comment on your (second!) SHF post at the moment. I'm so sorry about the spammer, but what I really want to say is how GORGEOUS your entries are, both of them. I can't wait to try the apple galette (especially since G's idea of heaven consists of any and all apple desserts), and I bet I'm going to love the Richmond Maids of Honor. My entry was fraught with peril, but I made it through, finally...

Thank you Julie - I'm still working on the comment thing, but I think it's alright now! M, my boyfriend just suggested putting thin slivers of marzipan under the apples in the galette - I think he might be on to something good...

Yup, it's a drag. I just had to install a plugin on my blog to stop card playing robots from spamming. Quel drag. I hope whatever you did has resolved it.

(just discovered your blog - nice one!)
